She made it for her nephew who is in the Navy.

Relatively Dimensional

by Jennie Esslinger

I have completed my first quilt, Relatively Dimensional using lovely Hoffman California fabrics.  I’m very pleased with how it turned out.

Thank you for your help, I couldn’t have done it without you and your amazing shop.  Cutting and piecing wasn’t bad, quilting the sandwich was challenging mainly due to bulk.  I did a basic straight stitch pattern roughly 2.5” apart following the box shape or outlining panel pieces. The crinkles are probably from the 505 adhesive I used on the batting.  I’m excited to see it after washing, hopefully the blue doesn’t bleed all over the light colors.  And maybe it will fluff a little.”

"Mosaic"

crafted by Janet Talmadge (Mar. 2023)

What a beautiful stained-glass project from our customer Janet featuring a free pattern called “Mosaic” from Jordan Fabrics using the Island Batik “Chickadee” fabric stack and blue backing fabric from the “Contempo” line.

I made this quilt for a friend who is having surgery in April.  My goal was to have it look like a stained glass window.  My spirits were lifted by the colors as I was sewing the blocks together!  The pattern is available for free from Jordan Fabrics and is called “Mosaic”. Donna Jordan has a wonderful tutorial that is easy to follow. I used a layer cake called “Chickadee” by Island Batiks for the mosaic design. This quilt went together pretty quickly and was a joy to sew. Machine quilting was done by Janine Scott in Cornelius, Oregon.”

Memory Quilt

by Amy Jorissen

This is a unique quilt project in remembrance of loved ones, beautifully expressed in art.
Here is the story of this special quilt, tenderly described by Ami in her own words:

My Mom taught me to sew when I was a little girl. I have always enjoyed sewing and recently learned to quilt. I have eight grandchildren and over the past year I made six of them each a quilt. I knew the quilt I would make for my last two grandsons would have to be a very special one. They are brothers and they live in heaven.

My daughter and her husband unexpectedly lost a baby boy, Hudson George, at 37 weeks in May of 2020. They became pregnant shortly after that and had a healthy baby boy, Baylor Hudson, in September of 2021. In May of 2022 he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.

I think of Hudson and Baylor often and especially at night when the stars are shining brightly. I began to search for a quilt pattern that would represent them and help keep their memory alive. I came across a pattern entitled ‘The Night Sky’ (Maywood Studios ‘Dusk to Dawn’) and decided to add two shooting stars to the quilt design…one for each of the boys. I wanted to use batik fabric for the quilt, and I wanted a fabric collection with various blue hues and a night sky theme. I found what I wanted online from Creekside Quilts. Since I was unable to see the fabric in person, I contacted April and asked her for help in selecting the fabrics from the Island Batik Constellations Collection that would coordinate the best. She was amazing! She not only took the time to send me suggestions but sent photos of several color options for me to pick from.

The quilt was so much fun to make, and it turned out beautiful. Each and every stitch was sewn with love. A closer look at the stars reveals a ‘B’ and ‘H’ for the boys.

I know Baylor and Hudson are unable to snuggle with their quilt, but I think they would be ok with their Mom and Dad keeping it for them. I know they are in heaven together and shining brightly, watching over us all until we meet again.”

Batik Fabric Napkins

by Mari Graham (Sheridan, WY)

Island Batik - Calm Lagoon
Island Batik - Napa Valley
Island Batik - Mariners

Here are beautiful cloth napkins made by Mari Graham featuring
Calm Lagoon, Napa Valley, & Mariners fabric collections from Island Batik.

“These are so much fun to make and are so beautiful. I particularly like making the napkins with the Island Batik fabrics as I like the weight of them. The Hoffman specialty prints are nice too, but they’re a little lighter in weight. These make wonderful gifts (who can’t use a cloth napkin!) and I love how the batik pattern is on both sides of the fabric vs. having a white back.

– Mari

Easy Instructions:

  • 1/2 yard makes 2 napkins
  • Cut two 17.5″ squares
  • Fold and iron each side 1/4″, then fold to miter each corner and then iron and clip each corner.
  • Turn edges one more fold and iron as you go (this will bring the fold to ~ 3/8″).
  • Stitch sides 1/4″. That’s all there is to it.

Valley Blossoms

pieced & appliqued by Lynda Bridge (Pittsburgh, PA),
custom quilted by Mary Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA)

Look at this gorgeous heirloom applique quilt called Valley Blossoms from a pattern by Judy Niemeyer. This was made from a custom kit from our store with fabrics from Island Batik’s River Valley collection.

Here is a detailed description from the quilt-maker:

The appliqué was raw edge done with a manual satin stitch over the top.  I used a satin stitch and matched the color of the thread well to the appliqué. This seemed to accentuate the design best. The fabric used was from Island Batiks River Valley line.

I made three of Judy Niemeyer’s paper pieced quilts prior to Valley Blossoms, so I understood her method and enjoyed doing them. The challenge was placing all the appliqué pieces in the correct place to tack down. I talked to April and she told me about a light box that was 24×17. That was large enough to put the paper template on the light box and fabric on top to insure proper placement! My favorite part was seeing the results as each section was completed!”

Moroccan Sunset - by Hoop Sisters

crafted by Barbara Michonski (Oct. 2020)

Here is an amazing in-the-hoop embroidery quilt project by Barbara Michonski using the Hoop Sisters “Moroccan Sunset” BOM design. Most of the batik fabrics used are from our store.

This is Barbara’s description in her own words:

“This was block of the month which was 5 months. I did the outside border which some didn’t. I looked online at paint colors and looked at boho colors. I used battelizer which is one of the Hoop Sisters creations instead of batting due to the amount of quilting and they usually add wool batting on top of the batting to make it have more definition. I didn’t do that on this one as it will be for spring and summer. I would say a total of 8 weeks it took me. I get color ideas on Pinterest with paint colors n a lot of times off of one of the fabrics that has many colors.”
